We are obsessed with the idea of encouraging tens of thousands of Australians and Kiwis to take the leap into the world of startups each year through programs like Giants, our mentoring product that’s made over 2000 mentoring matches and counting, or our love letter to founders, The Sunrise festival.
From building Day 0 relationships with fellow early-stage founders in our Welcome Club to dedicated small-group dinners, founder retreats and products to help you build a generational company, community is the beating heart of Blackbird.
Beyond all else, we exist to give you courage. If we back you, we believe in you, and we believe you can reach your wildest ambition. This starts from day one and continues on day ten thousand; we invested in Mel, Cliff and Cam at Canva back when their vision for democratised design was just an idea, and have invested in every round since.
We believe that giant leaps forward are made by a passionate few, so we invest in founders, not sectors or stages. Our companies are united only by their ambition to tackle the world’s greatest problems, led by founders who are doing their life’s work.
Blackbird is a startup and will always be run as a startup. Our style, our office, our events and our communications relate to the founders we back.
Founders come first, they are our reason for being. We work for our founders, they don’t work for us.
We make high conviction decisions after careful research and debate, but also trust our instincts built up over years of pattern matching.
We invest for the long term. Building iconic businesses takes the best part of a decade or longer. We don’t plan for exits.
We don’t need to know all the answers to make an investment decision. We’ll look to maximise the upside, rather than minimise the risks.
Everything we do, we do with integrity, in a way that we’d be happy to tell our kids about.
